My Fake Tan Routine

After trying hundreds of fake tanning products, I have finally found what works for me! It's not as easy as just buying a self-tanner and slopping it on your body, it takes a lot of preparation to get it looking flawless...

------------------------------------

Prepping the skin

This is the most important step in ensuring your tan turns out like those of the Victoria Secret models. First things first, I jump in the shower and e x f o l i a t e !
This is so crucial as it removes all the dead skin cells that will potentially cause your tan to look patchy. My favourite product to use for this is a body scrub. I've been trying out the Hempz Pink Pomelo and Himalayan Sea Salt Body Scrub (that's a mouthful) for a few weeks now and I love how it makes my skin feel. If you've applied tan previously and are still left with some tiger-looking stripey tan then I recommend lathering your body in baby oil prior to going in the shower and let it sit for around 30 minutes.

Baby oil is a lifesaver when trying to get off a stubborn tan!

------------------------------------

Should you moisturise before applying fake tan?

This is the question that gets debated so much when it comes to Fake Tanning. Personally, I like to moisturise before I apply Tanning Mousse and it hasn't caused me any problems. I get quite dry skin so I feel that if I don't moisturise, my tan will just stick to all the dry patches on my legs. However, it's totally down to you (I would recommend waiting 10 minutes or so for the lotion to sink in though).

------------------------------------

Application

Use a mitt! I'm pretty sure we've all made the mistake of using our hands to apply Fake Tan and ended up with orange fingers resembling Wotsits. I'd also recommend standing in front of a mirror because that makes it so much easier to see if you've missed any spots. Many will tell you to blend in circular motions, but if I'm being completely honest I tend to just frantically move my mitt around in all different directions before the tan dries!

------------------------------------

What tan do you use?

The answer to this will differ for everyone but I generally like to switch my Fake Tans around quite a lot. I am currently using the Norvell Tanning Mousse along with my Brazil Bronze Tanning Face Mist. If you're looking for a tan that doesn't have that 'biscuit smell' then I'd seriously recommend the Norvell Tanning Mouse! Now that I think about it, it kind of smells like Marzipan so if you like smelling like a Marzipan Cake then this is the tan for you!

------------------------------------

Should you fake tan your face?

Again, this is all down to personal preference but personally, I do like to put fake tan on my face. However, I must warn you that the tan will rub off on your face the quickest as you tend to wash your face more often than the rest of your body. I like to use the Brazil Bronze Face Mist as it provides such a natural looking tan on your face and doesn't get all patchy around your nose and mouth.

------------------------------------

How to maintain your tan?

I'd highly recommend investing in a Tan Extender. These will help keep your tan looking fresher for longer and some of them also act as a Gradual Tan if you're looking to achieve a darker look. I like to use shower gels that contain no fragrances or any harsh chemicals as that can also intefere with your tan. At the minute, I've been loving the Sanex Sensitive Skin Shower Gel which you can pick up from Boots for about £2!

And that's it! I hope I've given you a few tips and tricks on how to achieve the best looking tan and I hope I've given you some insight on what products work best for me!

  1. I used to love tanning in a tanning bed, but obviously there are so many health concerns with that so I stopped. I guess you could say, I am a sun baby. I always wanted to try fake tanning but never knew how to go about it. Do you ever find that certain products can turn you 'orangey' - that is my biggest fear. Thanks for sharing your tips! This winter (Canada, eh) I will give it a try!

  3. I’m really digging the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very hard to get that “perfect balance” between usability and appearance.
